Boiling is the tastiest way to prepare fresh corn. Few people prefer microwave other people prefer grill, but boil corn on the cob is irresistible especially when it is freshly picked. How long should we boil the corn on the cob? The question has many answers and options. There are many opinions on how long to boil corn as there is no single recipe for it. Dilemma starts with whether one should cover the pot or not, whether we should put salt in water or not. First of all it is important to keep in mind is that never to overcook. It will not taste fresh and you will lose the flavor of the corn when overcooked. Pull off the silky threads. To retain freshness husk the corn just before cooking. Other important point to keep in mind is that if they do not fit in the pot never cut it with knife, which tends to crush the kernels. It will be better to break them in to two with your hands. To retain its fresh taste and flavor it is advisable not to put salt in water when boiling. Putting salt in water will kill its sweet test.
Many people put corn on the cob in water and boil. But it is not advisable as you will have to boil for more than fifteen minutes to twenty minutes or even more depending upon the variety of the corn. By doing this corn on cob will lose its freshness.
I boil corn on the cob, in unsalted water, according to the directions in one of my oldest and trusted cookbooks. Correct method is to put enough water in pot so as to cover corn on cob. Before you start boiling add a little sugar (1 tablespoon of sugar) in water. It is very important as it will bring out the corn's natural sweet taste. Start the burner and let the water boil. There is no need to cover the pot. Once the water start boiling drop the corns in boiling water. Allow water to start boiling again and boil hard for three to four minutes. If you want corn on the cob more tender than five to seven minutes. Don't let the corn stand in the water. Remove corn on the cob from the water immediately .Let the water drains from each ear as much as possible.
Serve with softened butter and add salt to taste. |
